The May Tricks, just like The Matrix: Living in a Dream World like Neo

As the continuous summer heat season has just begun, the pressure is rising. Everything happening around me is showing signs that it is time to jump off the cliff and fall into the stars. A bridge that will guide me through is quickly being built. Just as a slingshot needs to move backward before you throw something, and just as it often gets hot before a cold front moves in, the pressure is rising, and once the big bang takes place, it will not be to destruct, but to build a better life. It will be my job to help others do so. Clouds may not allow you to watch what lies ahead, but I feel that a bright future is waiting to be discovered.

Passion for Chocolate drives a Continuous Improvement Project Based Experiment

Everybody loves chocolate, or most of us at least. The problem here is that what makes it great usually has its price. Cocoa butter may be the one causing pimples when they would normally not appear. It can also be considered candy (with all its implications), too much sodium, etc.

The question here is: can we make a better treat than what popular brands offer? If so, can we make it healthier? So far, chocolate cookies have been successful, chocolate cake has not been 100% successful. Big companies surely have an answer to this, and when the market is ready to turn their discoveries profitable, we may start seeing them at the grocery store. 

The slice on the left is dark chocolate cake, made with dark cocoa, the second one is made with cocoa, and the one on the right is red velvet cake from a commercial brand. Except for the latter one, the ones I prepared myself were sweetened with fructose. Splenda will make the cake dry (unless you use polydextrose, which is not available at the local supermarket), but even using Stevia, as an alternate sugar substitute, sugar is needed to make bubbles (or a sugar alcohol substitute).

Duty comes first, and while the possibility of moving out to live alone might give you less time to spare, this will not be the end of the project. I acknowledge the fact that this may take years, though.

ETS TExES in a non-traditional Way

An exam coming from a predominantly christian, but not catholic state, in a country with religious freedom, the last thing one would imagine is to take a standardized state test with images of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. This is something reasonable, as this may not be comfortable for non-catholic or non-christian people. But who would be surprised to see this in a catholic school in a predominantly catholic country?

The end of May seems so far away now, as I have yet to discover the upcoming lifetime adventure. After a long fought battle, victory draws near. Something exciting is about to start, and I just can't wait.

Seguimos haciendo Experimentos

Después de haber intentado disolver dulces para dar sabor al vodka uno se va dando cuenta de qué sirve y qué no sirve. Con los Warheads no era una mala idea, solo son malos dulces que se venden por el hecho de que tienen una capa ácida. Los jelly beans son relativamente buenos, solo hay que filtrarlos, pero lo mejor de todo vinieron siendo las gomitas de soldados de manzana del H-E-B, que solo se venden en el otro lado. Los Life Savers Gummies no estuvieron mal.

Al separar los residuos sobrantes de gelatina, veo que el de manzana seguía bueno, lo metí al refri para que tuviera una mejor consistencia para comer y tenía buen sabor (a pesar de la pésima apariencia). Solo faltaría que a los soldados de manzana les dejaran de poner dióxido de titanio como enturbiante, y así quedaría mucho más transparente y presentable. Casi todo el vodka se desperdicia, porque esta es la primera vez que a pesar de que le falta presentación  el sabor quedo realmente bueno. Lo que quedó en las copas de abajo a ver para cuando se da la oportunidad de usarlo con jugo que combine.

Mientras salgo a tomar las fotos veo que Turingo sigue bien amolado, no ha sido el mismo desde hace casi ya dos años cuando estaba gordo. Eso sí, estresado de estar tirado todo el día .. Allá las dueñas dirán como lo cuidan.

Errores

Da la impresión de que representas agua pura cuando todo lo haces bien, y en la copa en la que estás puede haber una cápsula de colorante que cuando se revienta, por más chica que sea te mancha por completo.

A veces te equivocas, y corregir los errores una vez que quedas manchado puede ser como un chorro de agua pura, que va a tardar tiempo en que vuelva a dejarte con agua sin color.  Eso va a depender de la confianza que tengan en ti para seguir reponiendo esa agua manchada y que no revienten más cápsulas por error.

What Shopping implies

Shopping is cheaper when it is done with family or friends, especially when you need to travel long distances in order to find reasonable prices. The only problem when shopping with ladies is that what should take four hours at the most (depending on the size of the place) can take them two days. So you need to be prepared to either visit other places or take a long nap in the hotel if your mother/sister/wife/daughter is going with you.

Both outlets and malls are becoming increasingly beautiful, as architects would probably describe, though the latter ones are better places to simply go for a ride. The problem with outlets is that there is absolutely nothing to do once you are done except for sitting or walking in circles.

A shopping mall can be different depending on what you find other than clothes. Closure of stores such as the Discovery Channel Store, Sharper Image, as well as bookstores in certain places have taken away what makes a place worth visiting instead of staying right at the border, except for restaurants such as the Cheesecake Factory or The Rainforest Cafe.

What all shopping places have in common is that within a few minutes your feet end up needing a massage, which only worsens throughout the day, right when you have your massager in your room, 400 miles away. This is not what happens when you walk faster and longer, such as climbing a mountain, watching beautiful scenery, etc.

Even if you don't get to buy a book, a good place to visit will always be Barnes & Nobles. I often find interesting things in the bargain section. Right here, as well as other bookstores' bargains is where I've stocked up my collection of weather, science and space. Cooking books look great, so once my budget grows, I'll be able to try those expensive recipes. Before cooking expensive dishes, I will try travel books and prove the greatness of all those places. With a sight like this (as seen from a window, as shown on the next two pictures), I might try new mystery novels during the summer or Christmas vacations (once I get to have them).

En la orilla de los bosques: San Antonio, San Marcos, Austin, Fredericksburg y la sierra de Santiago

Cuatrosemanas después de pasar por la carretera I-35, cuando iba a las carreras, regreso de paseo. A pesar de lo emocionante que fue el paseo anterior, el ir a las carreras no deja tiempo para disfrutar la fotografía y los paisajes. Casi todos los árboles estaban reverdeciendo. Es increíble ver que en una zona sin montañas sea un punto específico en el que decidan o no crecer los árboles. Pasando por la I-35 hacia el norte, al llegar a Moore, Texas después de ver puros arbustos empiezan a verse encinos. Curiosamente, es el punto aproximado donde empieza la zona de tornados en Estados Unidos. Probablemente es donde en promedio empieza a chocar la humedad del golfo de México con los frentes fríos, formando tormentas eléctricas fuertes que a veces producen tornados.

50 kilómetros después llegas a San Antonio, donde algunas zonas están tan escondidas entre los árboles que no pareces estar dentro de una ciudad. Digo yo que estas a la orilla del bosque porque casi todo el sureste, este, noreste y partes del norte de Estados Unidos están en zonas boscosas. 

Después de San Antonio a media hora esta San Marcos, otra media hora y llegas a Austin. 

Tomando la 290 hacia el poniente llegas a la 281, unos minutos al norte, en Johnson City das vuelta hacia el poniente y después de una media hora llegas a Fredericksburg. Este es un pueblo alemán.

Aquí parece que el tiempo se regresa y te transportas a Europa del siglo XIX. La nieve sabe deliciosa y algunas personas todavía hablan alemán. Curiosamente, en un estado donde la mayor parte de las personas ya no son blancos (que no son latinos), aquí eran la inmensa mayoría, tanto visitantes como turistas. Esto no parecía Texas no solo por la falta de diversidad, sino porque al menos en Main Street, la calle principal, el diseño urbanístico es al estilo europeo, donde todo está amontonado (igual que acá en México, solo que sin el estilo Europeo). Una ciudad típica Texana donde hay banquetas en todas las zonas residenciales (con espacio adicional para arboles y zacate) y estacionamientos amplios alrededor de cada negocio hacen que una ciudad como San Antonio, con unos dos millones de habitantes ocupe casi el mismo espacio que el área metropolitana de la Ciudad de México, que tiene más de 20 millones de habitantes.

Unos 400 kilómetros al sur-suroeste tenemos la Sierra Madre, y parte de ella en el municipio de Santiago, Nuevo León. Acá las zonas boscosas en general no tienen árboles de esos que se ven amarillo-naranja-rojos en otoño. Aquí hay principalmente pinos. Algunos encinos como los que hay en Texas tienen hojas que se caen, pero al mismo tiempo en que salen hojas nuevas. Hay también arboles de maple (sobre todo alrededor del arroyo), pero estos yo creo que han de ser los únicos de los que no se extrae la miel de maple porque nadie la produce.

Da tristeza ver más de la mitad del bosque quemado, especialmente los pinos. Cuando se vino el ventarrón de Semana Santa del 2008 me tocó ver que el cerro de enfrente del rancho quedo completamente quemado. Por alguna extraña razón, en esta zona hay pinos del lado poniente de las lomas, y puros matorrales del lado oriente, que es donde tenemos el rancho. Espero yo que futuras generaciones puedan disfrutar de un bosque regenerado más sano, como algunos dicen que hacen los incendios. Y puede ser, porque desde hace muchos años hay plaga de esa cosa gris que ponen en los nacimientos, y que también había en Sea World.

The last one and I'm done!

It is 1:24 AM as I am writing this. A semi-chat conversation on Facebook with Ana Elisa through a shared picture from 9GAG made me think about this. It is insane to keep goofing off so late at night. 

I will take advantage of time tomorrow when I'll be out of the office. In order to avoid procrastination, I sent a confirmation e-mail to my thesis adviser informing her that I will be sending my first part of the thesis project no later than Monday night (March 18).

I am excited about the future that awaits right after my thesis is done! Later than expected, but it is now time to jump off the cliff and fly! My job will be to prepare others to do so.

Another fun Experiment

Candy is just a treat, however, it has a wide variety of uses. For instance, it is good for photography  as well as experiments. 

When I first found out about Raspberry Vodka I thought about the possibility of dissolving sour candy in a vodka bottle in order to get your drink ready without having to add any juice. After the previous failed experiment with green apple jelly beans (lack of tartness, and suspended carnauba wax) I decided to add Warheads. For some strange reason, Results were even more disastrous:

The small glass cup above shows exactly how the mixture looked like, the picture below shows how it could be mixed in with soda in order to dilute the bad flavored mixture:

The mixture tasted exactly as the medicine you used to drink when you were little: syrup with alcohol, which tasted horrible. I have yet to try gummi bears in order to see how they grow and how they taste.
